Latest News (updated 3rd January)

For our annual Saturday garden visit we will be travelling to the Wirral Peninsula to wander around the magnificent Ness Botanic Gardens followed by a visit to the Gordale Garden Centre.

Ness Botanic Gardens were created originally in 1898 by Arthur Bulley, and presented to the University of Liverpool by his daughter in 1948, six years after he died.

During a Spring visit to Ness we would expect to see rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias, cherries and many other trees and shrubs in flower. Additional features to visit include the laburnum arch, the large rock garden and the alpine and arid houses.

We will be having a guided tour of the garden, for those who choose to take it. There will be additional free time after the tour to go and explore in more detail the area that you found most interesting, or to visit an area not included inthe tour.

Gordale Garden Centre, Chester, was founded in the same year as the Ness Garden was gifted to Liverpool University, and one of the first garden centres established in the UK.  Gordale has a 4 acre Outdoor Plant Area has over 10,000 different varieties of plants for you to choose from for your garden.

Our trip will leave Handforth (Paddock Shopping Centre) at 9.00am.

Cost of the trip is £20.

Please see Simon Poucher to reserve your place (£10 deposit please).

Members and friends are all welcome. Please see the "Garden Visits" page for more details about Ness and Gordale.

The Society

Our society was established many years ago to promote interest in all matters connected with gardening and horticulture generally. It meets from September to May on the first Tuesday of each month. Each season brings a fine range of speakers on a wide selection of topics and in the summer trips and visits are arranged to places of horticultural interest.

The club has a thriving membership of approximately 100. Meetings, Outings, Visits and other activities take place throughout the year. The Society organises the annual Handforth Village Show in July. If you are interested in taking part in this open show please contact a member of the committee. Every two years, a number gardens in the Handforth area are opened to the public for two days.

New members are always very welcome and if you would like to join the Society please contact a member of the committee.
